* We played with Jens Lekman on Thursday night. One of the things I like about him is that he was in part responsible for letting people know about Arthur Russell.

Arthur Russell was one of the pioneers of the Downtown music scene in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. His music is some of the most idiosyncratic and soulful I've ever heard and it is vast in it's exploration and quantity. There is a documentary about Arthur Russell called "Wild combination" and it showcases much of his amazing music as well as having some lovely interviews with his family members and his long-time partner Tom Lee, who since Arthur's death has made it his life's mission to release and preserve Arthur's music.

Jens Lekman compiled an Arthur Russell tribute EP. "Four Songs By Arthur Russell" in 2007. It includes covers by Jens Lekman, Vera November, Taken by Trees and Joel Gibb.

Wild Combination is a good album to start with if you want to check out Arthur Russell. I think anyway.

A Movie about the Photographer Diane Arbus. I found this on the Patti Smith blog. I hope it's good.

Alison Bechdel

Okay so I just wanted to start posting on this blog with stuff that I really love because otherwise it's just Gladeyes news and well......... you know.

Anyways, my flatmate introduced me to Alison Bechdel about a year ago when she recommended her book Fun Home and ever since then I have been completely hooked. Fun Home is a graphic novel/book about Bechdel's Dad and all his exploits and about how he could never really come out. It's also about their relationship and her coming out story. It's smart funny and Alison Bechdel's illustrations are just amazing.

She also wrote and illustrated a comic series which started in 1983 and chronicles the lives of a group of "crunchy lesbian friends" (thanks NY times) called Dykes to Watch Out For. The strip finished in 2008 and sees through break-ups, civil unions, protests, arguments amongst friends about a bunch of issues including trans-sexuality and the gay community. There is a compilation of the Dykes to Watch Out For strips called Essential Dykes to Watch Out For
, I picked this up and was totally hooked. Chances are they have a copy of Dykes to Watch Out For in some form at your local library, so there's no excuse not to check it out.

So I came across her blog the other day and it's also fun and informative and awesome. http://dykestowatchoutfor.com/blog
