Show with Fabulous Diamonds

Hey,

We are playing a show with Fabulous Diamonds and Sam Hamilton this Friday the 10th at the Wine Cellar. Fabulous Diamonds are this great band from Australia, it's a girl (on drums) and a guy on keys, they both sing. Pitchfork describes it as "head spinny" maybe you can decide for yourself here. I heard their second CD in a record store when I was in Sydney and liked it so much I bought it on the spot. Also, it's a good opportunity to see us because from sometime mid next year we will probably be hiatising for a while.

Christmas songs

The best Christmas song has got to be Fairytale of New York by the Pogues. We are writing a Christmas song at the moment so this has been on my mind. Thoughts? I once gave away a Pogues album because I thought it was a bit crap - how stupid could I be?

Enmore Theatre and Hope Sandoval

-----------------

-----------------

Recently I went to see Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions play in Sydney. They played at the Enmore theatre, which is sort of like a grungier version of the civic. Anyways, it's very cool, go if you get a chance.

The Making of Expervier

I promised I'd put our movies on-line a few years ago and finally I've gotten around to it. This one, The Making of Expervier, is the third in a series of improvised movies that we made. It documents us and our friends, as we make a movie about the launch of our home-made raft Expervier. It's on youtube in 5 parts but you can watch them all below.

Cute

".....so I go ahead and say the worst possible thing. "Very Cute." This is why I should adhere to Rule 2.
In the ensuing silence, I have time to contemplate the word cute - how dismissive it is, how it's the equivalent of calling someone little, how it makes a person into a baby, how the word is a neon sign burning through the dark reading, "Feel Bad About Yourself."
And then finally she says, "Not my favourite adjective."

Just Kids

"I don't consider writing a quiet, closet act.
I consider it a real physical act.
When I'm home writing on the typewriter, I go crazy.
I move like a monkey.
I've wet myself, I've come in my pants writing."
--Patti Smith

-------------

Patti Smith promised Robert Mapplethorpe that one day she would write the story of their life together, Just Kids is it. I've been wanting to blog about this for sometime because it's one of the best books I've read in a while. I always find Patti Smith's music confronting in the best kind of way, but her writing is different. There is a real humbleness to the way she tells this story. And a really beautiful humour and affection in the way that she talks about all the characters she and Robert were involved with in the art and music scene of New York during the 60's and 70's, when they lived their firstly as a couple and then as very best pals.

Patti Smith was a music journalist for the likes of Rolling Stone magazine and there is a really nice part in the book where she describes how she feels about music reviewing. She says that she was never really interested in critiquing bands but rather in making lesser known music known to a wider audience.

You can find more of Patti Smith's writing at http://www.oceanstar.com/patti/poetry.htm

Beer

BEER

Charles Bukowski
from: Love is A Mad Dog From Hell

I don't know how many bottles of beer
I have consumed while waiting for things
to get better
I dont know how much wine and whisky
and beer
mostly beer
I have consumed after
splits with women-
waiting for the phone to ring
waiting for the sound of footsteps,
and the phone to ring
waiting for the sounds of footsteps,
and the phone never rings
until much later
and the footsteps never arrive
until much later
when my stomach is coming up
out of my mouth
they arrive as fresh as spring flowers:
"what the hell have you done to yourself?
it will be 3 days before you can fuck me!"

the female is durable
she lives seven and one half years longer
than the male, and she drinks very little beer
because she knows its bad for the figure.

while we are going mad
they are out
dancing and laughing
with horney cowboys.

well, there's beer
sacks and sacks of empty beer bottles
and when you pick one up
the bottle fall through the wet bottom
of the paper sack
rolling
clanking
spilling gray wet ash
and stale beer,
or the sacks fall over at 4 a.m.
in the morning
making the only sound in your life.

beer
rivers and seas of beer
the radio singing love songs
as the phone remains silent
and the walls stand
straight up and down
and beer is all there is.

Chuckie's in Love

I forgot how cool Rickie Lee Jones is. She wrote Chuckie's in Love
which is a song with a twist at the end.
She has done numerous albums, ranging from straight singer song writer like her self-titled debut, to more experimental like Ghosty Head.

* We played with Jens Lekman on Thursday night. One of the things I like about him is that he was in part responsible for letting people know about Arthur Russell.

Arthur Russell was one of the pioneers of the Downtown music scene in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. His music is some of the most idiosyncratic and soulful I've ever heard and it is vast in it's exploration and quantity. There is a documentary about Arthur Russell called "Wild combination" and it showcases much of his amazing music as well as having some lovely interviews with his family members and his long-time partner Tom Lee, who since Arthur's death has made it his life's mission to release and preserve Arthur's music.

Jens Lekman compiled an Arthur Russell tribute EP. "Four Songs By Arthur Russell" in 2007. It includes covers by Jens Lekman, Vera November, Taken by Trees and Joel Gibb.

Wild Combination is a good album to start with if you want to check out Arthur Russell. I think anyway.

A Movie about the Photographer Diane Arbus. I found this on the Patti Smith blog. I hope it's good.
